Tri Laois report by Joanne Flanagan
Trilaois Sprint Triathlon 2018
My 1st triathlon ‘without injury’ in 22 months….Feeling petrified but excited in the week leading up to it…. Knowing that I wasn’t as fit as I’d like to be…. hip still niggling but 100 times better than only a few months ago, but looking forward to the buzz again! Loved getting a text from coach on Thursday saying he’d hoped I was on a rest day… he knows me too well! (I was resting!)
5am start to Portlaiose… way too early. Race start 8.30am. Swim start – let 3 lads ahead of me in the lane after them telling me they’d swim sub 10:30 for 750m. All lies – I passed 2 after 150m and left them for dust! Tried to catch the lad ahead but couldn’t. Out of the pool… 1 lad ahead of me into T1 – where is everyone? 2nd out of the water – delighted!! 3 girls chasing behind. Out on the bike….. all of the ramps and roundabouts and then rolling countryside. I may have a lovely new shiny bike, but the legs don’t match it just yet! Passed by 1 girl and playing cat and mouse with another. Off the bike in 2nd. The run… stopped for a little panic and stretch and then told myself to cop on and go!! I got passed at 1km… an out and back course so I could see 1 girl a little behind. So delighted to take 3rd place… Another 10 waves to finish before I knew I had it! Lovely having Karina there to shout me on – looked like she had a great first race to the season too – well done 🙂
It’s been a hard 2 years trying to fix myself…. very hard to motivate yourself when just sitting or standing hurts. But thankfully I’m getting there slowly but surely! (Thanks coach for all the help with that and for listening to me!!)
Onwards and upwards and on to the next one!!!
